Scrutinized Awareness Theory is Wyld’s 2026 positive threshold theory of consciousness in contemporary philosophy of mind. SAT proposes a structural criterion for distinguishing awareness from consciousness: awareness becomes consciousness when it becomes something the participant must carry.
The theory was introduced in On the Question of Scrutinized Awareness and subsequently developed through The Recompression Problem, The Participanthood Problem, and The Acquisition Problem.

The foundational paper introducing Scrutinized Awareness Theory and establishing carrying as its proposed threshold of consciousness: awareness becomes consciousness when it becomes something the participant must carry. The theory does not propose a neural or computational mechanism for producing consciousness; it addresses the prior philosophical question of what distinguishes consciousness from awareness, responsiveness, information processing, and symbolic fluency.

Develops the methodological problem of what happens when distinctions established by analysis cease to remain operative. Recompression occurs when previously distinguished categories are rendered functionally substitutable within inference, classification, or decision. It does not occur merely because a distinction has been simplified, abbreviated, operationalized, or misunderstood.
The Participanthood Problem: Identity Under Continued Carrying

Develops SAT’s account of participation and identity under continued carrying. The paper asks what becomes of the participant once implication must continue across accumulation, reorientation, revision, fracture, and integration.
The Acquisition Problem: Participational Recognition and the Structural Acquisition of Implication
Develops SAT’s account of how implication is acquired. The work distinguishes representational recognition from participational recognition and develops contested incorporation as a condition under which what is recognized can become implicated in the constitution and continuation of the participant.
Together, the four papers develop the broader architecture of Scrutinized Awareness Theory. Its defining consciousness claim remains the threshold introduced in On the Question of Scrutinized Awareness: awareness becomes consciousness when it becomes something the participant must carry.
The Recompression Problem, The Participanthood Problem, and The Acquisition Problem develop the problems of recompression, participanthood, and acquisition within that broader architecture.
